Achieving a "Net-Zero" energy home (a house that produces as much renewable energy in a year as it consumes) is relatively straightforward if you have a massive suburban roof and acres of land. The Passivhaus Philosophy

Because urban houses cannot generate massive amounts of energy, the only solution is to drastically slash their consumption to near-zero. This is achieved using the stringent German Passivhaus (Passive House) building standards.

  2. Mechanical Heat Recovery (MVHR): Since the house is airtight, an intelligent ventilation system constantly brings in fresh air from outside, but passes it through a heat exchanger. The stale outgoing air transfers 90% of its heat to the fresh incoming cold air, eliminating the need for heating.
  3. Triple Glazing: Massive, highly engineered windows face south to capture passive solar radiation during the winter, while deep exterior overhangs block the high summer sun to prevent overheating.
  4. Micro-Generation: With the heating bill reduced by 90%, a very small solar array on a tiny urban roof is suddenly sufficient to cover the entire annual energy demand of the household.

Urban net-zero homes prove that sustainability does not require sprawling landscapes. With brilliant engineering and meticulous construction, the cities of the future will generate their own power, block by block.
