The stages of an installation from scratch

Installing underfloor heating is not simply changing the flooring; it requires meticulous preparation of the base of the home by following these steps:

1. Emptying and hammering the floor: The first step is to hammer all the current floor. If the home is old, in fact, it is much better, since in the past it was customary to put sand under the tile, which makes it easier to extract the necessary thickness more quickly.
2. The first layer of cement: Once the ground is clean and leveled, a first layer of cement is poured to leave a solid and smooth base.
3. The egg trays and the pipes: On top of this base, the insulating plates (popularly known as "egg trays") are placed, which serve as guides and supports for distributing the water pipes through which the heating will circulate. It is also time to install the collectors, which are the distribution cabinets where the different water circuits of the house are centralized and regulated.
4. The mortar and the final pavement: The pipes are covered with a new layer of cement or special concrete. Once dry, the final floor is installed. Here the choice of material is key: we recommend installing porcelain flooring with high thermal conductivity, since it transmits the heat from the water to the environment much more efficiently than other types of flooring (such as wood or laminate).

The impact of the work: time, space and logistics

Since this is a structural intervention, there are three very important logistical factors that you must plan for:

• Evacuating the home: During the execution of the work, it is absolutely necessary that the house is empty and vacated, since the entire usable surface is being raised at the same time.
• Work deadlines: The total installation time is significant and usually varies between one and two months, depending on the square meters and the drying times of the mortars.
• Raising the floor level: You must take into account that this entire set of layers will cause the floor to rise by about 10-12 cm compared to the original level. As a direct consequence, a small amount of subsequent carpentry will have to be done to trim the doors of the house so that they fit perfectly with the new height.

Although it requires significant planning, the end result is a home with extremely high energy efficiency (which ties in perfectly with aerothermal) and unparalleled comfort.
